Hello everyone,
We have another brief blog. Don’t sound too cheery now, I
know you enjoy these.
This brief is self-explanatory, that’s what I thought too
until we got too much into deep and how our lecturer explained it.
The brief is to illustrate a teacher abseiling down into a
cave full of books, files, papers and computers. The teacher needs to wear
climbing gear (typically a hard hat with a lamp glowing, a harness and rope).
The colours need to be moody, and the teacher cannot look too stressed
out. The measurements that the
illustration should be is 105cm x 297 cm (half an A4 portrait) with a 5mm bleed
(this means to draw an extra 5mm around the illustration just in case the
printing cuts off the bits that needs to be on the picture).
First we have to draw a sketch by 1pm that afternoon when we
got given the brief.

Research:
Think it’s fair to say that I have been round teachers since
I was small (primary school, high school, college, and now university but we
use posher words for university and college there tutors and lecturers.) Though most teachers I had were female. So I
chose a female to be my characters gender. Teachers do not have a style but
usually its smart casual (smart top with black trousers with flats) if a brief
specified a catholic school it would be a nun as a teacher in all honesty.
As for moods these are the colour palettes I used:-
Since I think these are moody enough, I wanted dark colours
with blues, purples and greys.

First of all the lecturer ,Dan, said I needed to work on the
perspective of the illustration and make the teacher look like she is going
down, and to work on the hands.
[use of different media]
I used coloured pencils first off but I was not too keen on
this so I switched using berol fine liners but the selection of colours were
limited.
Dan with this one said the teacher looked too creepy, which
is fair enough I tried to draw in a different style than I usually do and it
was a risk. So I went back to the Glen Keane style that I am used too. I do not
think Dan would appreciate that I am used to draw the little mermaids face more
than I am used too, oops.
I didn’t expect the final piece to be stressful than I
thought it was. I mean everything goes wrong at its final moments doesn’t it?
The pencils too transparent on Photoshop CS6 or Photoshop CS6 does not like my
commands that I want it to do.
I can understand why Dan said what he doesn’t like, I know
that the light is very jagged and I personally don’t like it very much but he
told me how I can improve for the formative and summative assessment, so here is what I need to do before that times :
- The teacher doesn’t look stressed out, she looks too happy, so I need to change it.
- The lighting is horrible, try again.
- The background looks copy and pasted, try again.
Just minor adjustments, right?
This is what I am handing in on assessment. I think I done
it well on the best of my abilities of little knowledge I know thus far.
That’s it folks! I have nothing else to say, just thank you
very much for reading and I shall see you shortly!
See you soon,
Alexandra.
